An Irvine woman accused of acting as an unregistered agent for the Chinese government and surveilling a relative of a high-ranking Taiwanese official was arrested Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport, according to federal authorities.
The woman, a Southern California real estate agent, allegedly operated on behalf of Chinese intelligence officials without notifying the U.S. government. Prosecutors say her activities included tracking a relative of a senior Taiwanese official and passing information back to handlers connected to the People's Republic of China.
Court documents describe a pattern of contact with Chinese officials dating back several years. Investigators claim she received instructions and compensation for carrying out tasks that included monitoring individuals and reporting on their movements. The case is part of a broader federal push to counter foreign influence operations on American soil.
The arrest at LAX took place as she was preparing to board a flight, though authorities have not confirmed her intended destination. She is expected to appear in federal court in the coming days to face charges related to acting as an agent of a foreign power without proper registration.
If convicted, she could face significant prison time. Federal officials stressed that the investigation remains active and additional charges may follow.
