Kinepolis Completes Acquisition of Showcase Cinemas, Including Seven Massachusetts Theaters

BOSTON- Kinepolis Group has completed its acquisition of 13 Showcase Cinemas locations in the United States, including seven in Massachusetts, expanding the European cinema operator's presence in the Northeast.

The deal adds theaters in Boston, Lawrence, Lowell, Revere, Seekonk, Springfield, and Worcester to Kinepolis's portfolio. The remaining six locations are spread across New York, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Kinepolis, based in Belgium, operates more than 100 cinemas across Europe and North America. The company said the acquisition fits its strategy of growing in markets with strong moviegoing traditions and dense urban populations.

Showcase Cinemas previously operated under National Amusements, which had been shedding assets in recent years. The sale marks another shift in the regional cinema landscape as chains consolidate and adjust to changing attendance patterns.

Employees at the acquired locations will transfer to Kinepolis. The company said daily operations will continue without interruption, and existing loyalty programs and schedules will remain in place for now.

Industry analysts note that while streaming has pressured theatrical exhibition, premium large format screens and concessions revenue continue to draw audiences. Kinepolis has emphasized investments in recliner seating, laser projection, and expanded food menus at its European sites.

The Massachusetts theaters give Kinepolis a significant foothold in a state with a robust film culture and several major universities. The company said it plans to upgrade select auditoriums over the next 18 months.
