These 10 ZIP Codes Are the Most In-Demand for Homebuyers. All of Them Are in the Northeast or Midwest

A new report from Realtor.com reveals a surprising shift in where homebuyers are focusing their search. The ten most in-demand ZIP codes in the country are all located in the Northeast or the Midwest. Not a single entry comes from the Sun Belt or the West Coast, a major change from the pandemic years when cities like Austin, Phoenix, and Boise dominated the lists.

The data shows that buyers are now prioritizing suburbs that offer a mix of affordability, easy access to major job centers, and a lower risk of extreme weather. Places like Chicago's western suburbs, parts of New Jersey, and towns outside of Boston and Philadelphia are seeing the highest number of views per listing. These areas offer more square footage for the dollar compared to coastal metros, and they also tend to have solid school districts and shorter commutes.

Another factor is climate resilience. Many buyers are actively avoiding regions prone to wildfires, hurricanes, or extreme heat. The Midwest and Northeast offer a more temperate climate, which is becoming a selling point. Realtor.com's analysis also notes that inventory in these ZIP codes is tight, meaning homes are getting multiple offers quickly. For anyone still looking to buy, the report suggests expanding the search to these overlooked regions, where the competition is fierce but the long-term value is strong.
