The Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund, known by its ticker XLRE, gives investors a low-cost way to own the real estate slice of the S&P 500. Its expense ratio sits at just 0.09%, making it one of the cheapest options for U.S. focused real estate exposure. The fund holds large domestic REITs like Prologis, American Tower, and Equinix, which dominate the industrial and data center segments.
On the other side, the SPDR Dow Jones Global Real Estate ETF, or RWO, reaches well beyond the U.S. market. It charges 0.50% in expenses, but offers holdings in Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, and other developed markets. This fund spreads risk across different economies and currency zones, which can help when the U.S. market slows down.
For investors comparing the two, the bigger question is how much global real estate exposure you actually need. XLRE keeps costs low and stays simple. RWO adds complexity and higher fees but opens the door to international property markets. Neither fund is a bad choice, but the right pick depends on whether you want to stay home or travel abroad with your real estate allocation.
