Construction crews are pushing ahead on the next phase of a major technology campus in Fremont, a project that could eventually bring as many as 1,000 jobs to the area.
The development is rising in a part of the East Bay that has become a magnet for tech companies looking for space outside the traditional centers of Silicon Valley. Builders have already completed the first portion of the campus, and work on the second stage is now in full swing.
When finished, the site will offer modern office space designed for large employers. Backers of the project say the campus could support roughly 1,000 workers once companies move in and operations ramp up.
Local officials have pointed to the project as a sign of continued interest in Fremont as a business destination. The city sits along the Interstate 880 corridor, giving companies access to a large labor pool and connections to both the South Bay and San Francisco.
The construction phase itself is providing work for tradespeople in the region. Over the longer term, the bigger question is how quickly tenants sign leases and how many of the promised positions actually materialize.
For now, the sound of heavy equipment and the steady rise of steel and concrete mark another step in the transformation of this stretch of the East Bay into a tech hub.
