The Extraordinary Real Estate of the Founding Fathers Would Be Worth Hundreds of Millions Today

The Founding Fathers built more than a nation. They built some of the most valuable real estate in American history. If the homes of the original revolutionaries were on the market today, their combined worth would likely top hundreds of millions of dollars.

George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in Virginia is the crown jewel. The sprawling plantation sits on the Potomac River and includes a mansion, outbuildings, and hundreds of acres of land. Modern appraisals for similar historic waterfront properties in the D.C. area suggest the estate alone could fetch well over 100 million dollars. Thomas Jefferson's Monticello in Charlottesville, with its iconic dome and mountain views, would command a similar price. The architectural significance alone drives the value into the tens of millions, but the historical weight makes it priceless.

Alexander Hamilton's home, The Grange, is a different story. Located in Manhattan, the two-story Federal-style house sits on a small plot. But the land it stands on is the real fortune. A single-family home in that part of New York City, with a private yard, is a rare commodity. Real estate experts estimate the land value alone at 20 to 30 million dollars, even before factoring in the historical structure.

John Adams and John Quincy Adams shared a home in Quincy, Massachusetts. The Old House, as it was called, is a modest saltbox by comparison. But its location near Boston and its pristine condition would make it a multimillion-dollar property. James Madison's Montpelier in Virginia, a massive brick mansion on 2,650 acres, would likely sell for 50 million dollars or more.

These homes are not just museums. They are prime real estate that has appreciated in value for over two centuries. The land, the views, and the history combine to create properties that would be unaffordable for almost anyone today. The Founding Fathers did not just change the world. They also made some very smart investments in dirt and bricks.
