Thousands protest in Albania against Kushner real estate project

TIRANA, Albania -- Thousands of protesters gathered in Albania's capital for the fourth straight night on Thursday, voicing strong opposition to a planned luxury tourism project on the country's southern coastline that has been tied to Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former U.S. President Donald Trump.

The demonstrations, which have swelled in size each evening, reflect growing public anger over the proposed development on the pristine beaches of the Ionian Sea. Critics argue the project threatens the natural environment and bypasses local planning laws. Many Albanians see it as a symbol of opaque land deals and unchecked foreign influence.

Protesters marched through the main boulevard of Tirana, carrying banners and chanting slogans against what they call the privatization of public land for the benefit of wealthy outsiders. Some demonstrators held signs reading "Albania is not for sale" and "Save our coast."

The proposed complex, reportedly backed by Kushner's investment firm, would include hotels, villas, and a marina on a stretch of undeveloped shoreline. Supporters of the project claim it will bring jobs and tourism revenue to one of Europe's poorest countries. But opponents say the environmental cost is too high, and that the approval process lacked transparency.

Local environmental groups have also raised concerns about water supplies and waste management in an area already strained by seasonal tourism. The Albanian government has defended the project, stating it meets all legal requirements and will undergo proper environmental review.

The protests show no signs of slowing down, with organizers calling for further action in the coming days. The situation highlights a broader debate in Albania between economic development and environmental preservation, as the country seeks to attract foreign investment while protecting its natural heritage.
